Navy League Privacy and Internet Policy
Philosophy
NLUS respects the privacy of its members and other visitors to its Web site and online community. NLUS strongly believes that if electronic commerce and online activities are to flourish, members must be assured that information provided online is used responsibly and appropriately. To protect online privacy, NLUS has implemented the following Privacy Policy.
Information Collection and Use
NLUS is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. We reserve the right to share information with trusted third-party vendors that provide contracted services for NLUS and its membership. Those select vendors have been provided a copy of this policy and are expected to maintain your data according to these standards.
Information collected on NLUS's Web site from NLUS visitors is done to fulfill requests inclusive of, but not limited to, ordering NLUS publications, providing NLUS assistance, offering NLUS approved goods and services to the NLUS membership, asking for NLUS assistance, facilitating communications between members through the online community, and registering for NLUS's Officer Placement Service.
NLUS will not sell, share, or rent this information to others in ways other than those disclosed in this statement.
NLUS does not collect any personal information from users browsing its public Web site. Users to the public areas of NLUS' Web site browse anonymously. Only aggregate data -- such as the number of hits per page -- are collected. Aggregate data are only used for internal and marketing purposes and do not provide any personally identifying information.
Credit Card Account Information
NLUS does not disclose credit card account information provided by its members and customers. When members and customers choose to pay online for goods and services offered by NLUS using their credit cards, NLUS does, however, submit the information needed to obtain payment to the appropriate clearinghouse. When credit card information is transmitted we use industry standard, SSL (secure socket layer) encryption.
E-mail
NLUS members who change or provide their e-mail address to NLUS may receive periodic e-mails describing the legislative, public affairs, meetings and convention, membership, dues notices, development updates or other activities of the Navy League. Upon receipt of the e-mail newsletters, the user may decide to opt-out of the e-mail distribution list by following the instructions at the bottom of the e-mail message. In addition, as a member, you may opt out at anytime by updating your preferences within the Member Profile Page by sending an email to service@navyleague.org, or by calling us at 800-356-5760 or 703-528-1775.
Users of NLUS's free e-mail service (envisioned in the online community under construction) may receive e-mail solicitations inclusive of NLUS and Council news, NLUS and Council products and services, promotions and e-mails from other NLUS members. It is NLUS policy that NLUS members MAY NOT use this free e-mail service to solicit individual members for charitable donations or for business purposes except when specifically authorized by the Council President or the National Organization. This applies to solicitation for business or any charitable purpose of persons who both known and unknown to the originator of the EMAIL message. Any such unauthorized use will result in termination of free e-mail service or access to the online community. Members who have chosen to publish their e-mail address within either the online community or a printed membership directory do so with the expectation of privacy. At no time are these e-mail addresses to be used for solicitation.
Guest Registration
NLUS Web site users who are not NLUS members may be asked to fill in NLUS's Guest Book to access certain restricted areas of the site. NLUS Web site users may also fill in the Guest Book voluntarily and independent of gaining access to restricted areas of the site. Persons who submit a Guest Book entry may be solicited for NLUS membership.
Contests, Give-A-Ways, & Surveys
Occasionally, NLUS may offer contests, promotional give-a-ways, or surveys. Participation is completely voluntary and the user therefore has a choice whether or not to disclose such information as user contact and demographic information. Information collected may be used to contact participants of prize notification or for solicitation purposes such as sending a request to join NLUS.
Recommend this Site to a Friend and E-mail this Article to a Friend
If a user elects to use NLUS's "Recommend this Site to a Friend" or "E-mail this Article to a Friend" features, we ask for the user's e-mail address and the friend's email address. NLUS will automatically send the friend a one-time e-mail inviting them to visit the site. NLUS stores this information for the sole purpose of sending this one-time e-mail.
Use of Cookies
Cookies are pieces of information that a Web site transfers to an individual's hard drive for record-keeping purposes. The use of cookies is an industry standard -- you'll find them at most major Web sites.
At the time of signing in as a member or a guest, NLUS sets a cookie on your machine. This information simply identifies you as a member or guest. The cookie facilitates you gaining access to protected areas of the site, pre-populates information on certain forms to save your from re-keying your information, and delivers custom content and images. The cookie is set for a one period after which without activity, the cookie expires and you must identify yourself as a member or a guest through our sign in forms.
Most browsers are initially set up to accept cookies. You can reset your browser to refuse all cookies or indicate when a cookie is being sent. However, note that some parts of NLUS's Web site will not function properly without the use of cookies.
Use of IP Addresses
An IP address is a number that's automatically assigned to your computer whenever you're surfing the Web. Web servers -- the big computers that "serve up" Web pages -- automatically identify your computer by its IP address.
NLUS collects IP addresses for the purposes of system administration and to audit the use of our site. When guests request pages from NLUS, our servers log the guests' IP addresses. We do not link IP addresses to anything personally identifiable, which means that a user's session will be logged, but the user remains anonymous to us.
Links to Other Sites
NLUS's Web site includes links to other sites. These sites are beyond our control. These other sites may send their own cookies to users, collect data or solicit personal information. Please consult the privacy statement of individual sites that are linked to by NLUS for more specific information.
Telemarketing
NLUS may utilize telemarketers within our Membership Department, Development Department or for collection of survey data. Members may opt out of telemarketing at any time by requesting that the caller place you on our do not call list, updating your preferences within the Member Profile Page by sending an e-mail to service@navyleague.org, or by calling us at 800-356-5760 or 703-528-1775.
Security
NLUS tries to provide security on pages that request personal data. Unfortunately, no data transmission over the Internet can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your personal information, NLUS can't ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us or from our online products or services, and you do so at your own risk. Once we receive your transmission, we make our best effort to ensure its security on our systems. When credit card information is transmitted, we use industry standard SSL (secure socket layer) encryption.
Consent
By using NLUS's Web site, you consent to the collection and use of this information by NLUS. Any changes to NLUS's privacy policy will be posted in this area.
