The Navy League of the United States would like to thank everyone that participated in our recent Photo Contest. Below are the winning entries.

Photo contest winner Rick C. is new to the Navy League, but not to photography or to the U.S. Navy.
Rick is a retired photojournalist and Navy Veteran from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rick became a part of the Navy League about two years ago when his fellow USS New Mexico Commissioning Committee members “coerced” him in to joining the New Mexico Council. Rick traveled to Port
Canaveral to take the winning photograph.
Rick’s winning photo was taken as part of a 400-photo book he edited, “A Year or So in the Life of New Mexico”. Rick had the opportunity to photograph the commissioning of the USS New Mexico as part of the project, which lead him to attend a tour and barbeque at the ship. The book is a benefit for the Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families, and received strong military support for the effort.
In the winning photo, CWO George Smith, USN(ret) and
CDR George Perez, Jr., USN, are discussing how modernday
submarines compare to the fleet boats of WWII. George
Smith served on the battleship USS NEW MEXICO (BB-40)
in 1939 and 1940, and then volunteered for submarine duty.
He passed away in March 2012 at age 95.
Rick is considering a sequel to the successful book, but is
currently enjoying the trip to the Navy League convention in
Hawaii that he won for his photo!

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles is another adopted command of the Beverly Hills Council, and with the assistance of CDR Timothy J., Schang (Commanding Officer, Air Station L.A.) they assist with fund-raising events by putting on an Annual Air/Sea Rescue Demonastration in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Life Guard “Baywatch.” At right, a U.S. Coast Guard diver gets ready to jump in and rescue swimmer.
Honorable MentionCDR Scott Robertson (left) and CDR Greg Fitzgerald, XO, join Command Master Chief Tracy Hunt and Oakland Navy League President Lou Lozano in offering “advice” to Oakland Navy Leaguer Chuck Gardner on cooking meat for the barbecue aboard the USS RODNEY M. DAVIS (FFG-60) during a port visit to San Francisco. The Oakland, California Council of the Navy League is well noted for holding cook outs and hosting events for visiting dignitaries and ships during port visits to San Francisco. During San Francisco’s annual Fleet Week we host literally thousands of Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and Marines.
