Forgotten Heroes of the Cold War Honored as part of National Day of Remembrance
Submitted by Bill Dudley
A continental breakfast in honor of Forgotten Heroes of the Cold War will take place in the Hart Senate Office Building, Room 902, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2008, as part of the National Day of Remembrance.
There were thousands killed or captured in Cold War missions or operational losses (reconnaissance and patrol flights, military assistance missions, ships at sea – including USS Thresher, USS Scorpion, USS Hobson, USS Liberty, and USS Pueblo) and humanitarian missions such as the Berlin Airlift.
Following the breakfast gathering, the Forgotten Heroes will be honored at a 12:00 noon ceremony at Section 34 of Arlington National Cemetery, with placement of flowers on the graves of those who died in Cold War operations, as well as at the grave of General James A. Van Fleet. Gen Van Fleet led the American Military Mission to Greece in 1948-50 during the Communist insurgency there, and gave those who struggled for freedom in Europe “the Will to Win” – he also led the US Eighth Army in the Korean War. His son, a USAF officer, was lost on a combat mission over Korea.
We invite you to join us in honoring the memory of our nation’s Forgotten Heroes of the Cold War. - Frank M. Tims, Ph.D.,
Chairman, American Cold War Veterans, Inc.
