The USS GEORGIA Return to Service (RTS) Committee [recently announced] an ambitious project which will involve the entire State of Georgia in helping to welcome home the state’s namesake submarine to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in March 2008.
CAPT Don Giles (U.S. Navy Ret.), RTS Committee Member and a National Director of the Navy League of the Unites States, has worked with the Georgia Regional Development Centers (RDC) in planning a project to take the Georgia State Flag on a trip across the entire state and into all 159 Georgia Counties. This flag is to be presented by Governor Sonny Perdue to the Commanding Officer of the USS GEORGIA at the Return to Service Ceremony in Kings Bay on March 28th, 2008.
The Executive Committee of the Georgia RDC’s met in Macon on Wednesday, December 5th and unanimously agreed to support the USS GEORGIA Flag Project. The committee members realize there are significant logistical challenges to overcome, but are determined to allow each corner of the state and all 159 counties be a part of this historic event for all Georgians.
“Bring the USS GEORGIA home” has echoed throughout the state for more then 14 years. The USS GEORGIA is 560 feet in length, displaces over 18,000 tons submerged and can carry a crew of 15 officers, 139 enlisted crew members and up to 66 Special Operations Forces for a sustained, long-endurance deployment.
Chairman of the committee and of the events surrounding the Return to Service (RTS) is Sheila M. McNeill, past National President of the Navy League of the United States. Honorary chairman of the RTS committee is Gov. Perdue and the Honorary Committee is made up of present and former U.S. Senators from Georgia, former Georgia Governors, and current and former Georgia Congressmen.
