San Francisco Council arranges "Ship's Namesake" visit for USS San Francisco (SSN-711)...

On Wednesday, October 24th, Chuck Shea, President of the San Francisco Council, arranged for a "Ship's Namesake" visit for CDR David Ogburn, USN, Commanding Officer of the USS San Francisco (SSN-711) to meet with the Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom. Along with CDR Ogburn was LTJG Brian Campbell, Asst. Engineer, and Command Master Chief (COB) Brian Schell.

In honor of the visit, CDR Ogburn presented a USS San Francisco (SSN-711) Ship's Plaque to the Mayor and the Mayor surprised us all with a proclamation naming October 24, 2007 as USS San Francisco Day!!

Mayor Newsom really enjoyed visiting with these key men of the USS San Francisco and wholeheartedly extend a very warm welcome. He also asked that we carry a message to the Navy League -- and to the Navy -- "That San Francisco is a Navy town! Always has been and always will be!!"

"This is an exciting time for the San Francisco Council," says Chuck Shea, a native San Franciscan. We reaffirmed the City's support for the Blue Angels and Fleetweek with a Board of Supervisors vote of 7 to 3 along with the full support of Mayor Newsom, and the business community.

Additionally, the San Francisco Council has linked arms with other groups like the Cathay Division of the American Legion and The Army ROA to support the JROTC program in San Francisco's High Schools.

"Frankly," says Shea, "I agree with Mayor Newsom. San Francisco is a Navy Town and we are proud to be a part of this community."
