WHAT IS THE PATRIOT FUND AND OUR ADOPT A HERO PROGRAM?
The Patriot Fund’s mission statement is to assist severely wounded and disabled men and women of the armed services by providing a conduit to promote independence, increase self-esteem and quality of life. Working in collaboration with America’s Huey 091 Education Foundation, American Airlines, Johnson & Johnson, and the Department of Defense’s TX representative from the Military Severely Injured Joint Support Operations Center, our initial goal was to raise $25,000.00 to be the first group in the nation to present a pre-qualified hero who has received severe injuries while fighting our Global War on Terrorism with a Johnson & Johnson iBot Mobility System

The Hardships of Service: Approximately forty percent of American troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are from Reserve units. For many, the financial sacrifices are great. Current law requires only an unpaid leave of absence for those called to active duty. While Reserve Service Members retain long-term job security, many make significantly less than they would in their civilian lives. Accordingly, nearly 41% of Reserve Service Members are impacted by a pay discrepancy between their military and civilian salaries. These financial sacrifices are compounded for the 56% of Reserve Service Members that are married. Fully 55% of married Reserve Service Members report a loss of income as a result of being called to active duty.
Mission Statement: Reserve Aid is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to providing financial support to the families of Reserve Service Members called to active duty in all five branches of the Armed Forces. Reserve Aid makes unrestricted, need based grants to military families who have a Reserve Service Member on full-time deployment to a combat zone or homeland security position. Our goal is to alleviate the emotional and financial burdens placed on the men and women called to serve our country by supporting their families at home.
CANCELLATION: The Greater Central Texas Council/Navy League Distinguished Speaker Program scheduled for 8 November and featuring VADM John Harvey, USN, Chief of Naval Personnel, has been canceled. VADM Harvey was unable to be in Austin on that Thursday evening and sends his sincerest regrets. We will attempt to reschedule him sometime in the future.
The next Greater Central Texas Council/Navy League Distinguished Speaker Program then will be on 7 December 2007 at 1815 at the Austin Woman's Club and will have as Guest of Honor, RADM Dan Davenport, USN. He is currently Director, Joint Innovation and Experimentation (J9), United States Joint Forces Command.
