Memphis Council Spirit of the Sea celebration planned for October 4 at Memphis Zoo ...

Adapted from the Memphis Area Navy League Newsletter, Summer 2007 Edition

"Spirit of the Sea," the Memphis Council's annual wine tasting, honors ceremony, and silent auction, a celebration of the spirit and enthusiasm of the Memphis Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard units, will be held on October 4, 2007, from 7:00 PM - 11:30 PM, at the Memphis Zoo. This has become the signature event on the Council's calendar and this year's event promises to be bigger and better than ever!

Our Sea Service units play a vital role in the security and defense of our nation. Navy League Memphis has had a great year, showcasing their work and capabilities: sponsoring visits to the submarine USS MEMPHIS, the aircraft carrier USS EISENHOWER, a council dinner with the Memphis Coast Guard commander, summer training for their elite Sea Cadet unit, and a business leaders' tour of the Millington Navy Base, to name just a few events. "Spirit of the Sea" offers the best opportunity to mingle with the dedicated volunteer servicemen and women who staff these ships and units. When you learn about their experiences and accomplishments, you will come away secure in the knowledge that our nation's defense is in dedicated and capable hands.

The venue is once again at the exciting Northwest Passage area of the Memphis Zoo, where, while enjoying wines from six Memphis vendors and delicious hors d'oeuvres, you will be flanked by polar bears and sea lions in walls of water, to include the ever-popular sea lion show.

Please join us on the evening of October 4. As in the past, it promises to be a most enjoyable occasion. Tickets are limited, so get yours early! If you cannot attend, a contribution to support those among us in uniform would be greatly appreciated.

Call Candy (901)683-5350 to receive a formal invitation or mail a contribution to Navy League Memphis, c/o Message Factors, 5100 Poplar Ave., Suite 3112, Memphis, TN 38118.

The Memphis Council has arranged for the CO of the USS MEMPHIS (SSN-691), CDR Glenn Pendrick and his Chief of the Boat, MCPO "Big Al" Atkinson, to join the celebration, so there will be many military guests attending for you to meet.
