Fanning Succeeds Fisher as NLUS National
President
Thach Wins DSA; Three New Hall-of-Fame Members
The election of Timothy O. Fanning to succeed John R. Fisher as the
Navy League's new national president was the highlight of an eventful
NLUS national convention--19-24 June at John Ascuaga's Nugget Hotel in
Reno, Nev.--that also saw the election of several other new national
officers and a new Board of Directors for 2001 and 2002, the induction
of three Navy Leaguers into the NLUS Hall of Fame, and the announcement
that James H. Thach III of the Empire Region had been selected to receive
the League's 2001 Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor the
Navy League bestows on one of its own members.
Outgoing President Fisher, who became chairman of the Navy League's
National Advisory Council, praised Convention Chairman Erek Jenstad and
Reno Council President Albert G. Moe for staging what he described as "an
exceptionally well-planned, extremely productive, and most enjoyable
meeting. The Reno Council and its marvelous committee deserve the appreciation
of all hands for getting us off to such an excellent start in this first
year of the new century and new millennium. This year's convention has
been one that will be difficult to match, much less surpass, in the years
ahead."
Some of the principal highlights of the 2001 convention are shown in
the photo essay on these pages; other photos and convention news will
be included in the September issue of The Navy Leaguer. The September
issue of Sea Power will include the names of the members of the League's
2001-2002 Board of Directors and national committees. A separate report
on the Maritime Policy Resolutions approved at the Annual Meeting of
Members on 23 June will be included in a future issue of Sea Power. JDH
