SPECIAL REPORT: SPECIAL OPERATIONS AND UNDERSEA WARFARE
A mix of old and new capabilities is being devised to bolster special operations capabilities. The Navy is re-establishing Riverine units, which played an integral role in Vietnam, to deny insurgents and terrorists the ability to use inland waterways as transportation and communication hubs, while at the same time exploring futuristic glider technologies for undersea and aerial missions. Meanwhile, a “Road Warrior”-like vehicle concept is being tested as part of an effort to provide better protection for Marines traveling in areas where mines, improvised explosive devices and other hazards may be present.
