Nominations Due by 7 January for NLUS Sea Service Awards

NLUS National President John R. Fisher has announced that nominations for the Navy League's Sea Service Awards will be accepted until 7 January 2000. The awards, presented annually, honor members of the sea services and others for their individual achievements in leadership, maritime affairs, scientific progress, engineering excellence, logistics competence, and service to community and country. Each award winner (and spouse) will be a guest of the Navy League at the League's year 2000 National Convention, 12­19 July at the Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia, Pa.

Following is the list of the awards:

The John Paul Jones Award for Inspirational Leadership: recognizes a Navy officer.

The Admiral Claude V. Ricketts Awards for Inspirational Leadership: recognize two Navy enlisted men (one E-7 or above, one E-6 or below).

The Captain Winifred Quick Collins Awards for Inspirational Leadership: recognize a Navy woman officer and a Navy enlisted woman.

The Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune Award for Inspirational Leadership: recognizes a Marine Corps officer.

The General Gerald C. Thomas Award for Inspirational Leadership: recognizes a Marine Corps enlisted person.

The Stephen Decatur Award for Operational Competence: recognizes a Navy officer or enlisted person.

The General Holland M. Smith Award for Operational Competence: recognizes a Marine Corps officer or enlisted Marine.

The Robert M. Thompson Award for Outstanding Civilian Leadership: recognizes a civilian who has furthered the cause of seapower.

The Rear Admiral William S. Parsons Award for Scientific and Technical Progress: recognizes a Navy or Marine Corps officer, or a civilian.

The Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement: recognizes a Navy or Marine Corps officer, or a civilian, for a notable literary contribution that has advanced the cause of seapower.

The J. William Middendorf II Award for Engineering Excellence: recognizes a Navy enlisted person in an engineering rating.

The Admiral Ben Moreell Awards for Logistics Competence: recognize a Navy or Marine Corps officer and a Navy or Marine Corps enlisted person.

The Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award: recognizes an individual whose efforts or achievements have contributed to increased public awareness of the importance of the U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.

Two awards honoring Coast Guard personnel--The Captain David H. Jarvis Award for Inspirational Leadership by a Coast Guard Officer and The Douglas J. Munro Award for Inspirational Leadership by a Coast Guard Enlisted Person--also will be presented at the convention.

Award nominations, including a proposed citation, should be attached to a cover letter that includes the following information: (a) nominee's full name, rank/rate, and Social Security number (in the upper right-hand corner); (b) current duty station; (c) home of record; (d) length of service (for military nominees); and (e) point of contact and telephone number, and e-mail address if available, to obtain additional information, if necessary.

The original plus six copies of the entire application should be sent to: Awards Board (attn: Louise Halse), Navy League of the United States, 2300 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. 22201-3308; telephone (703) 528-1775, ext. 553.

All nominations must be postmarked by 7 January 2000. Late entries will not be considered. Additional information may be obtained from the Navy League Home Page at http://www.navyleague.org.
