President’s Message: July/August 2024

Coast Guard and U.S.-Flag Merchant Marine

BY CHRISTOPHER R. TOWNSEND, NAVY LEAGUE NATIONAL PRESIDENT

Embracing the vital mission of the Navy League of the United States to champion the causes of our sea services, we extend our unwavering support to not just the Navy and Marine Corps but also to the unsung heroes of the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine. These maritime services constitute the bedrock of our thriving maritime presence, yet their significance often remains underestimated and underappreciated. Through tireless efforts to highlight the roles and contributions of these sea services, we pave the way for stronger advocacy and support, both within our Navy League councils and on Capitol Hill.

Since its establishment in 1790, the Coast Guard has stood steadfast in safeguarding our nation’s borders, providing aid during crises, upholding maritime laws and combating illicit activities. However, a daunting challenge persists as the Coast Guard continues to navigate the arduous path of securing needed funding and support from Congress.

Regrettably, because the Coast Guard falls under Homeland Security, not the Department of Defense, it poses many hurdles in ensuring they receive the commensurate support enjoyed by the other services. It is imperative for the Navy League to highlight this disparity and amplify the voices of Coast Guard personnel so their essential requirements are met with the urgency they deserve.

Similarly, U.S.-flag Merchant Mariners labor tirelessly behind the scenes, serving as the unsung linchpins of our economy. These dedicated individuals power the fleets that sustain the flow of goods into and out of the nation, underpinning the very fabric of our daily lives. The challenges they face in attaining adequate representation on Capitol Hill underscore the pressing need for a concerted effort to bolster their endeavors and help provide them with the requisite support, equipment and sealift needed to fulfill their critical duties.

The Jones Act, U.S. Maritime’s cornerstone legislation that is often misconstrued and criticized, stands as a vital safeguard ensuring opportunities for countless capable American civilians and veterans in the maritime sector. It is incumbent upon all true allies of our maritime interests to rally in defense of this pivotal law.

To our amazing “Sentinels” – the men and women of the Coast Guard and to our Merchant Mariners – we extend our deepest gratitude for your unwavering commitment to preserving the safety of our waters and fortifying the resilience of our economy, day in and day out. Their diligence is the foundation upon which America’s strength and prosperity rest.

With appreciation for your readership of this month’s Seapower Magazine, let us resolutely commit to educating the public about the multifaceted roles of the sea services, with a particular focus on honoring the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.
