Sarasota-Manatee Council Celebrates the Navy’s 249th Birthday

The Sarasota-Manatee Council of the Navy League of the United States recently hosted a memorable celebration in honor of the U.S. Navy’s 249th birthday. The event brought together local members, supporters, and community leaders to pay tribute to the Navy’s proud history and look toward its future.

The highlight of the evening was a powerful keynote address by Navy League member Bryan McGrath (CDR USN ret.), who is well-known as the author of the U.S. Navy’s 2007 Maritime Strategy. McGrath shared his insights on the importance of maritime power, stressing why a strong Navy is essential for America’s security and global stability. His words served as a reminder of the enduring value of sea power in protecting our national interests.

A special cake-cutting ceremony followed, honoring both the Navy’s history and its future. Representing the “oldest and youngest” sailors, Richard Plager, age 96, and Abigail Buhr, age 9, took part in the tradition, symbolizing the Navy’s legacy and the generations to come.

In addition to celebrating the Navy’s birthday, the Sarasota-Manatee Council used the occasion to announce an exciting new Partnerships Program aimed at supporting youth programs, scholarships, and adopted U.S. Coast Guard units. This initiative will expand the council’s impact in the community and provide much-needed support to those who serve.
