Orange County Council Hosts Veterans Essay Contest and Speaker Series

The Orange County Navy League Council recently partnered with California State University, Fullerton to host its first Veterans Essay Contest, inviting student veterans to share their personal stories of military service, transition, and continued leadership. The contest was created to highlight the experiences of veterans and emphasize the importance of supporting military-connected communities. It reflects the Navy League’s mission to educate, advocate, and support at both the local and national levels.

Three winners were recognized:

  • First place was awarded to James Burandt Nari, a former Marine and current Congressional aide. His essay, “Earning the Title – A Marine’s Path to Leadership,” traced his path from military leadership to public service and mental health advocacy. He received $1,500.
  • Hillary Thompson earned second place and $600 for her essay, “Beyond the Battlefield – A Mission to Heal.” A veteran and future social worker, Hillary wrote about her experiences with trauma recovery and her current internship at the VA in Long Beach.
  • Third place went to Erica Campos, a Navy veteran studying Human Services. Her essay, “Overcoming Challenges and Building a Future,” focused on her transition to civilian life and her efforts to advocate for women veterans. She was awarded $400.

The contest winners were recognized during a special event on March 24 at American Legion Post 291 in Newport Beach, where Admiral Scott Swift (Ret.), former Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, joined as a featured speaker.

The Orange County Council thanks Dr. Cameron Cook, Director of Veteran Student Services at CSUF, for his leadership and partnership in making the contest a success. His work continues to strengthen the connection between higher education and veterans’ support.
