Memphis Council Salutes Command Standouts in Mid-South Region

By Brett Davis

The Navy League Memphis Council recently saluted the best-of-the-best of commands in the Memphis and West Tennessee area, home to Navy Personnel Command, Navy Recruiting Command and Navy Manpower Analysis Center, all home-ported at Navy Support Activity Mid-South in Millington.

From recruitment to retirement, these commands provide support to more than 300,000 Sailors and their families.
Navy League Memphis Council recently awarded individual recognition presentations for Sailor of the Year, Junior Sailor of the Year and Blue Jacket of the Year. Additional presentations were made for Coast Guardsman of the Year to Sector Lower Mississippi River and Marine of the Year to Marine Site Support Memphis.

In addition, three scholarships were awarded to University of Memphis 4/C and 3/C midshipmen (MIDN) and four scholarships to University of Mississippi midshipmen. An honor graduate from each school was also presented with a commissioning sword.

“The enduring relationship between the Memphis chapter of the USNL and the NROTC Mid-South Region Consortium is truly inspiring,” said Capt. David Whitehead, commanding officer, NROTC Mid-South Region. “The midshipmen are able to grow as leaders and mentors through participating in USNL sponsored events and interactions with the Sea Cadet Corps. Additionally, the generous scholarships received from the Navy League recognize and help retain our stellar MIDN who are yet to be placed on a full national scholarship.”
