Hearing on the Nomination of Admiral Christopher Grady as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Full Senate Committee on Armed Services

December 9th, 2021 at 10:00 AM EST

On Thursday, December 9th, at 10 AM EST, the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services held a hearing on the nomination of Admiral Christopher Grady for re-appointment to the grade of Admiral and to be the Vice Chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff.

Admiral Grady’s most recent position was serving as a Commander of the Fleet Forces Command. He was also a Commander of the Naval and Joint Forces Maritime Component Command Strategic Command, Naval Forces Northern Command, Sixth Fleet, Striking and Support Forces NATO, and Naval Surface Forces Atlantic. Admiral Grady has been serving our nation for thirty-seven years and counting.

As stated by Ranking Member Jim Inhofe (OK – R), if Admiral Grady is confirmed, he would ensure an efficient interagency process between policymakers, the National Security Council (NSC), and the Department of Defense (DOD). Admiral Grady would also be required to work alongside the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Milley; oversee the Joint Requirements Oversight Council (JROC); serve as a senior member of the Nuclear Weapons Council (NWC); and partner with the Deputy Secretary of Defense to address policy challenges. Amongst his responsibilities, Admiral Grady would play a major role in our national security, especially in security from known threats and adversaries – China and Russia.

Admiral Grady believes he is prepared to take on the role of Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He asserts that he will have an open mind to ensure that U.S. military forces are effectively prepared, trained, and supplied to serve our nation through a “whole of government approach and in full support of our civilian leadership.”
