MIL-spec qualification of mission critical electrical shipboard equipment is often thought of as being limited to environmental tests such as shock, vibration and EMI. While these are undeniably critical aspects of the physical survivability of a system, the electrical performance (which can make or break a critical system) should never be overlooked.

Permission-to-play environmental tests (shock, vibration, and EMI) are very well understood by industry and can be mitigated by using isolated enclosures and special RFI shielding materials. Electrical and environmental performance was re-baselined by NAVSEA in 2017 with the introduction of MIL-DTL-24765B, which defines the grueling tests that will guarantee the U.S Navy the performance, longevity, and reliability they need. These tests go above and beyond the well-known requirements in MIL-STD-1399 and provide clear direction on how an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) should perform and how those parameters are documented.
