Honolulu Navy League Honors Ombudsmen, Welcomes Home U.S.S. Daniel Inouye, and Hosts American Patriot Awards

September and October have been eventful months for the Honolulu Navy League Council, showcasing the strength, resilience, and community spirit of Hawaii’s sea service supporters. The council recently hosted several significant events, starting with a heartfelt evening to honor the Navy’s Ombudsmen—the dedicated volunteers who provide essential support and guidance to Navy families during deployments and beyond.

These unsung heroes ensure families stay connected and strong, serving as a vital lifeline for our sea service community. The evening was filled with appreciation and gratitude for these volunteers, who often work behind the scenes to uplift Navy families during challenging times.

Shortly after, the Honolulu Navy League had the privilege of welcoming home the U.S.S. Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) after a successful 9-month deployment! To celebrate the ship’s return, the council greeted the crew with a warm welcome and plenty of Papa John’s pizza—an expression of thanks for their hard work and dedication to keeping our waters safe.

Honoring Community Leaders at the American Patriot Awards

The excitement continued on October 5th, as the Honolulu Council hosted the annual American Patriot Awards at the Ala Moana Hotel. This prestigious event recognizes leaders who have made significant contributions to Hawaii’s sea services and community. Congratulations to this year’s awardees: Bob Harrison, CEO of First Hawaiian Bank; CAPT Aja L. Kirksey, Commander Sector Honolulu; and the United States Coast Guard – District 14.

The event was chaired by Steven W. Colon, with Jeffery T. Griffin serving as Navy League President and Jane Ferreira as Executive Director. Attendees were treated to an engaging evening emceed by Kimo Kahoano, while Admiral Sam Paparo delivered a powerful keynote address and presented the awards. The night celebrated the shared mission of service and leadership that drives the Honolulu Council and its community partners.

The Honolulu Navy League Council’s ongoing support for service members, families, and the broader maritime community reflects the very essence of the Navy League’s mission. Whether through honoring Ombudsmen, welcoming sailors home, or recognizing outstanding leaders, the Honolulu Council continues to strengthen the bond between the Navy and its community.
