Greater Kansas City and Minnesota Council

The bond between a city and its adopted naval vessel is a unique and cherished relationship. Recently, the Navy League Councils of Kansas City and Minnesota orchestrated unforgettable “Namesake” visits for the crews of USS Kansas City LCS 22 and USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul LCS 21. Both councils showcased their dedication to fostering strong connections between their communities and the brave men and women who serve aboard these naval ships.

Kansas City’s Salute to USS Kansas City LCS 22:

The Greater Kansas City Navy League left no stone unturned in organizing a memorable Namesake Visit for the crew of USS Kansas City LCS 22. The crew’s itinerary included a tour of the Navy Reserve Center, the Harry Truman Presidential Library, a visit to the Missouri Veterans Home, and a solemn visit to the WWI Museum. The highlight, however, was the crew’s honor of throwing out the ceremonial “First Pass” at a Kansas City Chiefs game, symbolizing the city’s warm welcome and appreciation for their service.

Minnesota Welcomes USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul LCS 21:

Not to be outdone, the Minnesota Navy League Council went above and beyond in hosting the crew of USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul LCS 21. The USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul is the first Navy warship commissioned in Minnesota, The ship was commissioned in Duluth, MN last year and is homeported in Mayport, Florida.

The council rolled out the red carpet, starting with a warm greeting upon the crew’s arrival on a Friday. The crew was then treated to a University of Minnesota men’s basketball game, where they were recognized at halftime for their service. The visit continued with a stop at the Como Park High School Junior ROTC Program, a Marine Corps Birthday Celebration, and an appearance on KARE 11 Saturday Morning, a local NBC Affiliate TV station.

The weekend culminated with an unforgettable Sunday at the Minnesota Vikings game, where the crew had the unique opportunity to stand on the field and be part of the joint services color guard during the national anthem.
