Descendants of Sea Service Members Awarded a Total of $50,000 in Scholarships
ARLINGTON, Va. — The Navy League Foundation, the Navy League’s premier program to support education for children of the men and women of the sea services through academic scholarships, is proud to announce its 2023-2024 scholarship award recipients.
The recipients are selected through a rigorous application process, taking into account student academic achievement, aptitude test scores, essay response questions, personal character, and letters of recommendation. This year, five recipients were chosen from a pool of 542 applications for the 2023-2024 award cycle.
John J. Schiff Sr. Scholarship: Kolbe Lange of Canterbury, Conn.
Kolbe Lange is our top scholarship applicant for 2023. He is the oldest son of Navy LCDR Joshua Lange. Homeschooled his entire life, Kolbe has lived in Colorado, Iowa, Virginia, Texas, Sicily, California, and Connecticut. His high school extracurricular experiences involve scouting, 3D-printing, language designing, board-game development, and employment at a local plant nursery. He was a regional scholar for the Classical Learning Test (CLT) 10, an alternative to the PSAT. In addition, he published a short story for the CLT journal after he scored as one of the top forty students for one of the sessions of the regular CLT exam. Kolbe gained recognition on the Saddleback Community College Dean’s list after he excelled in their dual-enrollment classes. Kolbe is attending the University of Mary.
United Armed Forces Association Scholarship: Andrew Shelton of Lamar, Mo.
Andrew Shelton is a graduate of Lamar High School in Lamar, Mo. Andrew is a rural Missourian from a long line of sea service members. His father was a naval chaplain, serving beside Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard units in the Naval Reserves. His grandfather flew A-6 intruders and other aircraft in Vietnam with the Marine Corps. In school, Andrew participated in clubs such as Speech Team, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and Science Club. As a prospective business major, he joined FBLA, where in his first year, he won 1st place in organizational leadership at the district and state contests. Andrew is attending Pomona College and pursuing a double major in computer science and business management with a minor in Spanish.
Subic Bay-Cubi Point Scholarship: Mitchell Frahm of Marion, Iowa
Mitchell Frahm is a graduate of Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Ia. He is the son of a former Marine who served with B Company Marine Barracks Subic Bay in the Philippines. The lessons his father learned in the Marine Corps carried on to Mitchell in his daily life, both in sports and school. His dream is to be a successful businessman in a sports-related field and to play football professionally. Mitchell is attending Cornell College to pursue a degree in business management.
Harold Wirth Scholarship: Taylor Bonar of Lincoln Park, Mich.
Taylor Bonar is a graduate of Cabrini High School in Allen Park, MI. Taylor’s father proudly served in the Navy for four years. Throughout high school, her outstanding achievements were consistently recognized, as evidenced by multiple awards received annually. Additionally, Taylor’s dedicated academic pursuits were reflected in her consistent presence on the Honor Roll. Notably, Taylor’s academic excellence was further exemplified by the consecutive attainment of the prestigious Knights of Columbus All-Catholic Scholar Award for two years running. Her achievements include being a part of the National Honor Society and the welcoming committee for new students.
Jewell H. Bonner Scholarship: The recipient of this award has chosen to remain anonymous.
