Navy League Leadership Strengthens International Ties During Madrid Council Visit

A group photo captured key leaders in attendance: VADM (Ret.) Javier Romero, Madrid Council President. ADM Antonio Piñeiro, Chief of Staff of the Spanish Navy. Eva García, Navy League National Vice President and Past President of the Madrid Council; and Larry Salter, Navy League National President.

During a recent visit to Spain, Navy League National President Larry Salter had the opportunity to engage with the Madrid Council and senior leaders of the Spanish Navy, an experience he described as “a powerful reminder of the Navy League’s global reach and the strength of our maritime partnerships.”

On Nov. 20, Larry joined more than 175 guests at the Madrid Council’s monthly dinner; a longstanding tradition hosted ten times each year. Held at the historic InterContinental Madrid, the event brought together Navy League members, business leaders, senior Spanish and U.S. military officers, and representatives from the U.S. Embassy.

The evening opened with a presentation celebrating the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Navy delivered by the 78th Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. Building on that momentum, Larry addressed the audience with an update on the Navy League’s current initiatives and long-term outlook. He emphasized the organization’s vital role in strengthening America’s sea services and its commitment to deepening international maritime cooperation.

“It was an honor to represent the Navy League in a room filled with friends and partners who share our dedication to sea power,” Larry noted. “The Madrid Council continues to be a model of international engagement.”

While in Spain, Larry also conducted an office call with Admiral Gonzalo Sanz, deputy chief of the Spanish Navy, at Spanish Navy Headquarters. The discussion touched on shared maritime priorities and expanding opportunities for collaboration between the Navy League and the Spanish Navy.

Larry returned from the trip encouraged by the professionalism, hospitality and enduring partnership shown by our Madrid Council and our Spanish naval counterparts. “This visit showcased exactly what the Navy League does best—building relationships that strengthen our maritime community at home and abroad.”
