On May 22, Sasebo Council members attended a memorial ceremony at the Soto Dam in Yunoki Village to pay tribute to the 53 Americans and 14 Japanese personnel who lost their lives during the construction of the dam during World War II.
During the ceremony, Captain Fontaine expressed his condolences for the individuals who lost their lives. The ceremony included readings of their names by members of the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, accompanied by the laying of wreaths in their memory.
This was a touching tribute.
