Savannah Council Celebrates Local Service Members and Community Involvement

The Savannah Navy League has been actively engaged in recognizing local service members and supporting community events throughout the past month. From award ceremonies to guest speakers and charity events, the council is dedicated to honoring those who serve and giving back to the community.

On October 6th, Savannah Navy League President CDR O.C. Fowler, USN (Ret.), and Navy League member Bob Gephart traveled to Kings Bay, GA, to participate in the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Force Protection Unit’s Enlisted Person of the Quarter (EPOQ) Award Ceremony. ET1 Wyatt Bess, USCG, was recognized as the EPOQ for the period ending September 30th, 2024.

CDR Fowler proudly presented ET1 Bess with a Savannah Navy League EPOQ Award Certificate for his exceptional service. This ceremony was a great opportunity to connect with the Coast Guard’s Kings Bay unit and recognize the hard work and dedication of its members.

Meanwhile, on September 24th, the Savannah Navy League gathered for their monthly Dinner Meeting at Carey Hilliard’s Banquet Center in Savannah, GA. The event featured Ms. Haylee Foster, Voluntary Service Specialist at the Savannah VA Outpatient Clinic, as the guest speaker. Ms. Foster spoke about the many activities and services she helps organize for veterans, providing attendees with insights into how the Savannah VA Clinic is making a difference for its clients.

Earlier in the month, on September 14th, Navy League members participated in the South Effingham High School NJROTC Annual 5K Travel Fundraiser. Members Peg Schwing and CDR O.C. Fowler both completed the 5K/3.2 mile course, with Peg finishing 2nd in her age group and CDR Fowler earning a medal as the first (and only) 80-year-old participant in the event! The Savannah Navy League proudly donated $250.00 to the NJROTC Unit’s Travel Fund to support their cadets in future events and competitions.

These activities are just a few examples of how the Savannah Navy League is staying engaged and making an impact. From recognizing outstanding service members to supporting youth programs and veterans, the council is committed to fostering community connections and honoring those who serve.

Bravo Zulu to all the Savannah Navy League members for their dedication and involvement, and congratulations to ET1 Wyatt Bess on his well-deserved recognition! Follow the Savannah Navy League on Facebook!
