Bremerton-Olympic Council Honors Local Sailors and Celebrates Navy’s Birthday

The Bremerton-Olympic Navy League Council has had a busy fall, recognizing the exceptional achievements of local sailors and celebrating the U.S. Navy’s 249th birthday at its recent monthly luncheons.

During the September 10th luncheon, Council President Tom Zwolfer joined the Chief of the Boat (COB) from the U.S.S. Key West (SSN 722) to honor their 2024 Third Quarter Sailor of the Quarter (SOQ) and Junior Sailor of the Quarter (JSOQ). Each honoree received a beautifully engraved eagle statue as a symbol of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. The ceremony held special significance as the U.S.S. Key West, a Los Angeles-class attack submarine, is currently undergoing decommissioning at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

The recognition continued at the October 8th luncheon, where Zwolfer joined guest speaker Capt. John Hale, Commanding Officer of Naval Base Kitsap (NBK), in honoring the base’s 2024 Third Quarter Junior Sailor of the Quarter and Bluejacket of the Quarter (BJOQ). Once again, the council proudly presented the recipients with engraved eagle statues, signifying their commitment to excellence and service.

Adding to the October celebration, the council marked the U.S. Navy’s 249th birthday in a traditional cake-cutting ceremony. Capt. Hale and BJOQ Yeoman Seaman Karoline Royse had the honor of cutting the cake, symbolizing the Navy’s past, present, and future. It was a moment that connected the long-standing traditions of the Navy with the community’s ongoing support.

The Bremerton-Olympic Council also extends heartfelt thanks to all members who contributed Halloween candy for the council’s adopted units. These small acts of generosity help remind our sailors and their families how much they are appreciated by the community.

The Navy League is proud to support our sea service members and their families, and we look forward to continuing our mission of recognition and engagement. Bravo Zulu to all the honorees, and a big thank you to everyone who participated in these meaningful events!
