Marine Corps and Expeditionary Warfare: Anchored in Readiness, Driven by Purpose

BY MCPON (RET.) MIKE STEVENS, NAVY LEAGUE CEO

Expeditionary warfare has long been a defining element of our maritime strength. The ability to rapidly project power from the sea and respond anywhere in the world is what gives our nation strategic flexibility and global reach. At the center of this capability is the United States Marine Corps; agile, adaptable and always ready to answer the call.

As global threats become more unpredictable and dispersed, the relevance of ex-peditionary forces only grows. From humanitarian relief operations to combat missions in contested environments, Marines serve on the forward edge of Amer-ica’s response. Standing firmly behind them is the Navy and Marine Corps team, a seamlessly integrated force, built for agility, sustained by sea power and driven by a shared commitment to mission. Navy platforms, aviation, logistics and surface fire support make Marine operations possible. Together, they bring unmatched capabili-ty to any fight, anywhere.

The Navy League of the United States is proud to support this vital team. Across the globe, our members and councils are making a real difference in their communities. Many councils provide direct support to Marine Corps units and their families, orga-nizing care packages, sponsoring send-offs and welcome-home events, and offering enduring support throughout deployment cycles. These efforts may not grab head-lines, but echo deeply in the lives of those they touch.

Just recently, one of our councils hosted a barbecue lunch for Marines at Camp Pendleton, California. It was a simple gesture, grilled food, warm conversation, a moment to relax, but it meant the world to those who serve. Events like these foster connection, boost morale, and remind our Marines that their service is seen, valued and supported by the communities they protect.

In addition to this hands-on local support, the Navy League also plays a critical role in advancing national awareness and advocacy for the Navy and Marine Corps team. Our Center for Maritime Strategy provides thought leadership on expeditionary warfare, amphibious capability and integrated naval power, ensuring these topics remain at the forefront of strategic and policy discussions. Our Legislative Affairs grassroots program, organized by the Legislative Affairs Committee, empowers our members to engage with elected officials and advocate for the platforms and prior-ities that enable Marine Corps and Navy readiness. And our Maritime Policy Com-mittee helps shape the Navy League’s positions on critical issues, reinforcing the importance of maritime strength to our national security.

This is who we are — a network of dedicated members who believe in the power of presence. Whether it’s showing up to honor a returning unit, engaging local leaders on maritime issues, or mentoring youth, our Navy League family continues to make an impact where it matters most: at the local level.
