Mississippi Navy League in Action

The Mississippi Council of the Navy League continues to champion the sea services through events that honor service, recognize excellence, and build community relationships.

Council board members recently attended the Navy Birthday Ball in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy. The evening included remarks from Rear Admiral Endel Lee, the event’s keynote speaker, and Captain Luke Davis, Commanding Officer of NAS Meridian, and served as a proud moment of recognition for the Navy’s enduring legacy.

The Council also hosted a Hail reception to welcome Capt. Bob “Bass” Foley, the new Commodore of Training Air Wing One, and used the occasion to announce the renaming of its NROTC scholarship at the University of Mississippi. Now known as the USS Mississippi Louise and Tom McGuire Naval ROTC Scholarship, the award honors former Council President Tom McGuire, a U.S. Navy veteran, and his wife, Louise, for their lasting contributions to the council and the sea service community.

In September, Mississippi Council President Joe Mercado had the honor of presenting the Golden Stick Award during two recent winging ceremonies at NAS Meridian. The award, sponsored by the Council, is given to the student with the highest composite score during flight training. Recipients included LTJG Benjamin Weisel, USN, and Ensign Hugo Le Rolland, French Navy, both recognized for their outstanding performance and dedication to excellence in aviation.
