It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Admiral (Ret.) James R. Hogg, a long-time and distinguished member of the Navy League and the Newport County Council. Admiral Hogg passed away yesterday at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership and unwavering support for our mission.

Admiral Hogg’s remarkable career began in Annapolis, Maryland, where he was born in 1934. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956 and went on to forge an illustrious path as a Surface Warfare Officer. His command experience included a guided missile cruiser, two destroyer squadrons and a cruiser-destroyer flotilla. Notably, from May 1983 to March 1985, he commanded the U.S. Seventh Fleet, a pivotal role during a critical time for our Navy.

Following his retirement in 1991, Admiral Hogg continued to exemplify leadership in the defense community as the President of the National Security Industrial Association. In July 1995, he took on a transformative role as the director of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Strategic Studies Group (SSG), where he dedicated 18 years to the generation of revolutionary concepts for the future of the Navy. Under his leadership, the SSG thrived, emphasizing innovation and mentorship that shaped the careers of more than 400 military officers, many of whom achieved flag or general officer rank.

Admiral Hogg’s commitment to the Navy League and his generous support, including a recent contribution as part of Newport Council Annual Appeal, exemplified his dedication to our cause. He was a true leader in every sense and a remarkable advocate for America’s sea services.

Admiral Hogg is survived by his beloved wife, Anne, who resides in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. During this time of grief, let us honor his memory by reflecting on his incredible contributions to our Navy and our community.

Please join the Navy League in sending our heartfelt condolences to Admiral Hogg’s family and loved ones. His legacy will continue to inspire us all.
